Opening/Co-Headlining Tour?

So, I’m pretty sure there is some interest within the band in opening for a larger act in some of the markets that they are having some trouble breaking in to.  Who would people like to see them open for?  We’re talking full-blown tour, not one-off dates

I’ve always felt that they haven’t been picked up for an opening slot because they would set the bar too high for the other band.

My personal choice would be for them to hook up with a band that has a strong regional following in another part of the country and do something like a student exchange program.  For example, open out West for TLG, then have TLG open for them in a tour through the South.

Any other ideas?

same as it ever was

the boys have played with ALO so that would be a natural for them.

I’ve always felt that they haven’t been picked up for an opening slot because they would set the bar too high for the other band.

that’s kinda my thought too

what about Les out west and Umphrys in the mid-west to maximize exposure in those regions

me personally, I think they would be perfect as an opening band for either David Gilmour or Robert Waters on a national/international tour

all that said - the band is going to absolutely blow away the europeans at jam in the dam

I think a tour with TLG or ALO as described above would be beneficial.  I’m not down with opening for bigger acts though, not at this point.

It would not be cool to have to pay more money to see a shorter show (considering another band has to play too), so I would not like to see them play with anyone.  The 2.5-3 hours they typically play each show has spoiled me and is one of the main reasons I will drive out of state to see them.

coheadlining with the slip.

i think the slip played to less than 100 people here in nashville last time.  do they fill venues in the NE?

They played to like 15 people one time in Atlanta.

I don’t think they play to anymore people in the NE than pgroove does in the SE.  In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if pgroove draws more in the SE than The Slip in the NE.  Plus, as much as I like The Slip, I don’t see them getting anywhere with their live show.  Brad’s live vocals are bad enough to turn people off from their music (not me) and I just don’t see them building any momentum touring.  I think album releases are their bread and butter right now.  Like I said, an up and coming band like ALO or TLG would fit pgroove much better.

I’m just not a big fan of either ALO or TLG.  If I had to choose it would be TLG.

ETA: they did play a nasty ass show the other night.  Played Carbohydrates start to finish verbatim.  It was pretty cool.

Along the lines of the bigger acts thing…. I really liked that Trey and Phil toured together, split the time and switched on and off for an early set. I understand that people in certain areas might not know who pg is in comparison to a bigger act… and if they were not good and couldn’t hold there own i wouldn’t suggest this… but I think they could work out a deal to play the late set in certain cities. Other bands would respect that… especially down south. I would love to see thishappen!!!

we had tossed around the idea of a co headlining show with both PG and RAQ.  The idea was shot down in the second round of voting.  Number wise, yes they are a good match. They both have a good fanbase that travels. RAQ had a good show on Sunday night here in Boone.  They had over 50 presale for a Sunday night show at the Saloon.  I’ll find out tonight about the pre sale for PG’s Thursday night show.

as a music fan, I would have to agree with you LOL
I used to really like them, but that’s faded quickly in the last few years.

i’d like to see some “perpetual box” myself-  have boombox open and play set break-  PG would not get anything from this unless they played muscle shoals but it would be a good show

oh I voted against it. I like both bands, but I know how you guys feel about Raq.  I do have to admit that I have been impressed with Raq as of late.  Michetti is holding back alot more than he used to and it’s a little more Zappa-esqe too.  Not nearly as much shredding in Sunday’s show.

No PG and RAQ!!! I just saw RAQ in SF a couple of weeks ago. They were like spinal tap for half the show, the other half was good.

TLG would be a perfect coheadliner because the west coast is where the PG fanbase really need some help.

Part of me really wants Phil to do an Ozz Fest type thing, where he picks up a day’s worth of acts and tours around the country.  Big Summer Classic a few years ago was kind of the same idea.  Hit a few festivals along the way too.

I know that no one is really excited to pay more to see PG play a 45 minute set at a less intimate venue, but I’m sure they want to grow the base, so to speak, and break into under-developed markets.  My guess is they will never open for anyone in the South, because they don’t need to.  In the West, Mid-West, and Northeast, it would really help.  Although they have a good-sized loyal base in the Northeast, it really hasn’t grown in the last three years.

The Slip does alright up here, but they don’t tour all that often.  I think they also fit into the category of “Man, we’re going to look like shit if we have to follow those guys.”

I understand this line of thinking….but what about:

PG opening for the Chemical Brothers across all of Europe…..except its not really an opening slot, its more like an all-night affair, with PG playing a full two set show, and the Chem. Brothers rocking the late night party…so I guess it would be Chemical Brothers closing for PG…..

Anyways….its a dream….but damn if that wouldn’t be the goods….

I taped The Slip last time through Atlanta at Smiths Olde Bar and as much as I enjoy them - There was less than 20 people including staff when they finished playing. TLG is certainly larger out west than Pgroove is here in the South - In large part because the jam band scene is larger out there. Be careful what you wish for - Having followed DMB for a long time - I can promise you it is way less expensive to follow a band when you can drive there in 2-4 hours versus planes, hotels and big venues - not to mention seating and ticket prices. I always hope for a bands success, and immediately wish for the old days as soon as they find it.
