from jambands.com
Late night, Perpetual Groove showed off future forward momentum with one of the most sonically fascinating and interesting sets of the cruise so far. Where PGroove seems to be headed with the recent return of keyboardist Matt McDonald is a darker place, and for my own tastes, it’s a positive move, making the band seem not only contemporary but highlighting the visionary tendencies of this group that’s way more than a “jam band,” a dumb soundbite that ignores what strong songwriting and modern rock awareness this band has always possessed. A thick, growling cover of the David Bowie/Trent Reznor dark horse “I’m Afraid of Americans” early in the set reminded one how much deeper into the collective song bag Brock Butler and his mates dig, and many of the instrumental sections of the set reflected a denser atmosphere than the Pgroove of old, who ultimately surfaced in the final numbers asking “Where Are Your Friends Tonight?” (a perfect marriage of place and song) and pouring us a shot of sweet oblivious cheer before sending us out into the night. I may be wrong about where this band wants to go, and moreover, it may not be where some core fans want them to go, but my instincts say that if they pull off this evolution we’re in for the best music yet from them.

awesome.

oh yeah…already had a few texts today saying that their sets were fantastic.

Great job guys…keep it up

1/12/12 Pool Deck Stage Jam Cruise 10

I. Holy Ship, Space Paranoids, Sail On, Cairo, TTFPJ, Robot Waltz, Wake Up

Perpetual Groove delivered the goods on the pool deck stage. They simply shined and delivered a sonically perfect set that maintained its excellence even during the sitins. The theatre show was not the greatest. The ship was bouncing around at that point and because of the theatre’s location in the very front of the ship, it was particularly vulnerable to lots of unwanted movement, making it difficult on the band and the fans inside the venue. The New Deal set on the pool deck was simply amazing.

It was a lot of fun, the boys played incredible! Michael Travis (SCI and Eoto) sang the boys praises for their pool deck set. They were on fire!

The boat did run into a gigantic concrete wall and then 3 minutes later ran into a huge Steele pylon that made the boat lean to one side. And then a guy climbed up on the LED screen and fell 2 stories. The coast guard helicopter had to land on the boat and airlift him off. So we went around in circles for about 3 hours, making us late to arrive at Ft Lauderdale. Hope the dude’s OK, but he was in a restricted area that said ‘no climbing’.

But we are almost home. Hooray!

Having seen many performances on the pool deck, I have to imagine that this was pretty stellar. I love Gary with the band. Thanks for the vid! Good shit right there.

Quick fun fact trivia.

I’ve been waiting for the opportunity to talk with Bruce for a long time .
The reason: ( usually I wouldn’t have anything to say other than the regular
” Man I really like your music ” this time ,

My grandmother ( aka Nana ) went to Mary Washington College , Fredericksburg Va
Her roomate ? Bruce Hornsby’s mother. I’ve met Bruce’s mom several times.
I was telling about this long awaited opportunity , as I explained the whole deal, I’d be really
Surprised if he ever has another person approach him with that as the Ice breake?

He was really gracious , wrote Nana’s name down on a card in his wallet

I thought the pool deck set was probably the strongest set I have seen from P Groove in at least two years - tight and really on point

It was definitely the stronger of the two sets.  And the music on the boat this year was the best I have ever seen at any festival EVER.  That said, the non-musical moments surpassed anything I have ever experienced and, I dare say, equaled the musical heights.  Thanks to everyone, new and old friends!!  WOW!!
