We are investing in this process to put out a product that we hope will knock your socks off and we are simply trying something new.

When it is all said and done, at least one if not more of these upcoming shows will be available for digital download in multiple formats and also for the first time ever as a physical CD.

I’ve heard this before…

Why try to rework the wheel. Disco Biscuits, Phish, and many more all offer a fully open taping policy and are still successful with selling their soundboards. There is a warmth and feeling that come from a room recording that can’t be mimicked through a multitrack the same way, and as a live band, and after almost 10 years or something of allowing it, you should not take away the right from fans that if they purchase a ticket to your show, they have a right to record it. You’ve built your reputation on this open taping policy, why take it away.. Every single time you guys implement a new policy you have failed at the final product, which makes it upset us tapers more and more.. Why don’t you get it in place and offer a few recordings for free and work out the bugs before making everyone upset again.

actually agree with DK here

We have, prior to this announcement, extended an invitation as we always will to Joel to tape the shows as a backup to avoid any complications such as the previous NYE attempt. Without people like Joel, there is no way we would still be playing today. We hope he will take us up on that and we would never want to jeopardize your chance to hear a great PGroove show.

P.S….thanks for singling me out like that.  was bad enough with the way the Amberland recording was handled.  then was told y’all wanted to sell my recording even though I gave my opinion that only a multi-track ought to be put out there like that.  apparently no one even let the other tapers know about that little arrangement.

now back into TIP retirement

Another one bites the dust, yeah… Another one bites the dust….

Being an older fella and a fan of live music for over 30 years…  I must say no taping seems silly…  But carry on….

Again, if there is going to be an official live album, then by all means block off recording just like every other band does.  Live download sales though?  What it boils down to is a matter of respect.  Respect the fact that the band’s fans have been clamoring for this for years, and will line up to purchase these if and when they are made available regardless of whether they downloaded an audience source from the archive etc.  I guarantee you audiophiles like the tapers will be the first in line. There are very few people who actually tape this band these days anyway.  People like James and Paul (if he is still even interested in taping this band after all the past drama) held their recordings of the Amberland Heal set just like I did when we were asked to until long after the album was released, even though all of the new tunes stayed in rotation after Amberland making it somewhat irrelevant.  Respect is fundamental to ensuring the success of official live recording ventures, because without that you end up with people grabbing them and passing them around via the same ways half the Live Phish releases get circulated.  By no means should that be implied as a threat that I will do it, just speaking truth to power because I care about this band and this venture and want it to be successful.

The guys behind the recording efforts this time are dear friends of mine who I have known 10+ years (longer than I have been seeing PG).  I’d trust these guys with my life.  I got to listen to a bit of the raw mix as it was being recorded in Greensboro, and that alone has me as excited for what is to come of this, as well as future ventures between these guys and the band.  Unlike past recording efforts like the Lucas and Variety NYE shows where tapers weren’t allow to pull a backup recording for archival purposes and the official recordings ran into technical difficulties, I’ll put my neck out there that these guys won’t need me there as a backup, and will deliver a product that is second to none.  Good thing too, because until this policy is reversed I won’t be bringing my rig to any PG shows.  I’ll still be there…have no doubt about that.  Maybe I’ll get some some LED wire and make a green cowboy hat, or take up hula hooping, or whatever else I’ve been missing out on for the past 9 years and 250+ shows.  I hope to see you all there cool smile
