We wanted to get the word out as far in advance as possible about some changes to our taping policy for some of our upcoming dates. There will be no taping allowed at the following shows:
10/12 - Rhythm & Brews in Chattanooga, TN
10/13 - The Valarium in Knoxville, TN
10/14 - Exit/In in Nashville, TN
11/18 - Georgia Theatre in Athens, GA
12/30 - Center Stage in Atlanta, GA
12/31 - Center Stage in Atlanta, GA
We appreciate all of the taping support we have received over the years and we are excited about some changes that will be rolling out soon.
If you need any clarification on the taping policy for a show, please email Blue Mountain Management Group at (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
Thank you.

i doubt it. let’s see how new management handles it…they’ve kicked ass thus far (more press, more merch, more promo, more updates). let’s see what they are planning.

my $.02—->>> the tapers who have been along for the ride (Joel and James are two) should be allowed to tape but not post the recordings without band consent. That way a repeat of the NYE situation does not occur and the taper recording can be released if the band feels their recordings are not up to their standards. It would OK if they have to request authorization from the band ahead of time so management knows who is taping ...
but telling those long time tapers they CANNOT tape is just wrong - IMO

Taping the show’s is a fantastic way to let fans relive show’s they were at or show’s they missed. It’s also a great way to get new people to the experience…
As wonderful and accessible as the studio recordings are (not to mention the revenue stream they produce), they are just the TIP of the iceberg for what lies in store when Brock, hR, Albro and Perry get the chance to “do it live” (say that in Bill O’Reilly’s voice, its sounds better)... So much more depth and beautifully layered sonic goodness emerges from every opportunity the boy’s have to perform something live.
It’s this richness of sound, this depth of emotion they pour into the live shows that really hooks a fan… It happened to me in ‘07 and again on NYE ‘10 when I reemerged into this scene.
Clearly there are upsides and downsides to the past and future taping policies… Too much control and it feels as though not enough stuff might get out…
Too little control can lead to poor audio quality can dampen the spirit of excitement that comes with seeing a great set released…
But I think we as the fan’s need to recognize the band’s ambition to grow and move forward…
By allowing BMMG the opportunity to exert some editorial control in the form of pre-screening the tapings or sending in pro’s to record special shows (see Nov.18 GATH), we are guaranteed at least a good audio quality release, if not more…
I guess the point I’m trying to make is that there needs to be, and hopefully will be some good middle ground here…
Should the management refuse the fan’s the right to record, I would like to see high quality professional releases come quickly (Pay or no pay, I’m in this to support the band so whatever they need from me so long as its reasonable).
Should the wonderful group of fan tapers (thank’s Joel for capturing so many wonderful shows, and to the rest of the great tapers!) be allowed to stick their mic’s in the air or patch there mini-discs into the board, I would hope that management understands that we are used to fast releases on this type of taping and allow any pre-screening to be done as a priority so those who were there can share their experience with those who weren’t, thus continuing a great tradition that has surrounded this band for oh so many days…
Did that make sense or was it just the ramblings of someone desperately trying to avoid work right now?

Thank you for the feedback on the recent announcement in regards to some changes in the taping policy only for the shows listed above. Hopefully we can clarify a few things.
The reason we are not allowing taping at these shows is that we are planning to release them for sale through our new live release partner Munck Music (http://www.munckmusic.com). The shows will be recorded in a minimum of 24 tracks and will be professionally mixed and mastered. We discuss it in more detail in the new newsletter: http://perpetualgroove.fanbridge.com/campaigns/show.php?id=778035&src=facebook.
We are investing in this process to put out a product that we hope will knock your socks off and we are simply trying something new. To allow other recordings to be available for free during the initial sale process would defeat the purpose of this new thing we are trying and the expenses involved. We’re not changing things forever, nor will this be the policy at every show. We need to restrict taping at the TN shows as we go through the process of getting used to the workflow, the setup, the project needs and ultimately to learn how to make the time frame from recording to release move as quickly as possible .
When it is all said and done, at least one if not more of these upcoming shows will be available for digital download in multiple formats and also for the first time ever as a physical CD.
There was some discussion to sell this year’s Amberland recordings. Ultimately, we felt like the recordings were not quite where we wanted them and we released them to archive.org. It didn’t take us too long to make that decision. We imagine that same process will play out during the upcoming recording for the TN shows. We would never put out a product for purchase that we were not proud of or felt was the best possible representation of PGroove. If for any reason we ultimately decide against selling any of these recordings, we will almost certainly make them available to the public through archive.org. And we will do so as quickly as possible to keep with the spirit of always making our shows available for a listen as soon after a show as possible so that all can share in reliving the experience or hearing it for the first time.
We have, prior to this announcement, extended an invitation as we always will to Joel to tape the shows as a backup to avoid any complications such as the previous NYE attempt. Without people like Joel, there is no way we would still be playing today. We hope he will take us up on that and we would never want to jeopardize your chance to hear a great PGroove show.
At the end of the day, we hope you will support us for having the courage to try something a little different. This has been a year full of changes and change is not always easy and is sometimes a little scary. But we can tell you that we’ve never felt better about our dedication to the music of Perpetual Groove and this community and the people we love dearly.
- Perpetual Groove

Hope its a 24-48 fully digital track FOH board that you’re using every night. heard they’re really cheap
Venue SC-48 that the GATH and Exit/In put in are nice, but with 20 inputs and 18 digital outs…. add in even 2 pairs of room mics for ambiance and up still have 22 channels.
anyways, do it up right boys. Sure was a fun ride.
Also, I’m glad Joel has been hired on as permanent road crew position so that not a single show will ever go unreleased. Didn’t know there was an application.
It’d sure be nice to hear that Amberland 2010 Sunday show.
Maybe Joel or the Band will release it? Or maybe Paul who stuck it out longer than anyone will feel like putting it out there now.
who knows….
well i’m gonna go toss on dinner with the band from colorado and get stoked for a TN run coming up
maybe toss on Athens 2011 after that

Look, as long as these recordings ACTUALLY SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY, I’m totally OK with this new policy.
Yes, the tapers have been great over the years. Without them, who knows how many followers this band would have. And yes, the band has been great letting the the tapers do their job.
But there have been too many times where shows were taped and ultimately never used because of the “poor quality” issue.
Hopefully, this will not be a problem in the near future. Everyone else seems to be able to get SBD shows out for purchase. It’s time PGroove took that next step.

RickRoth - 06 October 2011 10:36 PM Wait…Joel is doing the TN run?
Didn’t you see the invitation that was extended to Joel?
He is now full time PG back-up taping crew, so yeah he’ll be at every single show.
Guess this means I can completely carefree at shows now, knowing that I don’t have to watch my gear.
Sorry Joel, maybe one day you’ll have that luxury

I’ve heard this before…
Why try to rework the wheel. Disco Biscuits, Phish, and many more all offer a fully open taping policy and are still successful with selling their soundboards. There is a warmth and feeling that come from a room recording that can’t be mimicked through a multitrack the same way, and as a live band, and after almost 10 years or something of allowing it, you should not take away the right from fans that if they purchase a ticket to your show, they have a right to record it. You’ve built your reputation on this open taping policy, why take it away.. Every single time you guys implement a new policy you have failed at the final product, which makes it upset us tapers more and more.. Why don’t you get it in place and offer a few recordings for free and work out the bugs before making everyone upset again.

P.S….thanks for singling me out like that. was bad enough with the way the Amberland recording was handled. then was told y’all wanted to sell my recording even though I gave my opinion that only a multi-track ought to be put out there like that. apparently no one even let the other tapers know about that little arrangement.
now back into TIP retirement
