Can anybody tell me the secret to downloading this?  Is there a particular program this needs to be opened in?  I have no idea. When I download it, it is saving it as a document file. Thanks for any help!

If you are using Windows, get uTorrent.  For Mac or Linux, get Transmission.

Harl, I’m previewing some of the songs right now.  I am listening on some (fairly high quality) headphones right now, so it will color my interpretation of the recording.  It sounds very clear indeed, considering the venue.  For example, if you remember the recording of PG’s inaugural late night Bonnaroo set, the MMJ recording definitely has more presence.  This said, there’s something about the recording that seems a little flat or compressed.  Almost like there’s a fullness missing that would have been present had one actually been in attendance.  Perhaps what I mean to say is that there’s a slightly artificial feel to the sound as it’s reproduced.  Playing with some of the EQ presets in my playback app gave it a little more depth.  Perhaps my interpretation of the sound is due to my unfamiliarity with the B&K mics that were used to capture this.  I’m actually amazed at how clear the band sounds considering that this was recorded outdoors at a reasonably large stage, and my mind is having difficulty coping with this, almost as if the mics (and the other top-shelf equipment that the taper used) are too clean.  There’s some chatter in the background, but in contrast to many other audience recordings, it’s actually in the background, noticeable at quieter passages, but less distinct than even the vocals on stage, which is once again different (a welcome difference, that is) from many other recordings.

So, my comments are in no way a slight of the recording.  It actually sounds excellent; just unlike anything I’ve ever really heard before.  I’ve only listened to a few songs from various points in the set, and the performance sounds great so far.  I actually just ordered Evil Urges this morning, so this is the first taste I’ll get of some of the material from that album.

Long story, summarized: worth the download, from what I can tell so far!

add torential downpours to that, too.

i think the recording is a little off, as well, but the playing is top notch.

Thinking about it, this may well have been a factor in the resultant recording.  A substantial enough presence of water may have affected the amount of ambient acoustic energy, given that a liquid will more readily absorb the energy produced by a transducer than a gas. To cite an extreme example, consider a speaker underwater.  This said, I’d expect it to sound muddled and bass heavy in this case, but this recording exhibits the opposite characteristics, instead have excessive treble, bordering at points on being harsh, and is not muddled sounding in the least.

After I wrote my post last night, I also previewed a Wilco show that I had.  The venue hosts shows both indoor and outdoor, though I imagine with a band like Wilco—in May, when the weather is nice in Austin—that it was the outdoor venue.  That recording sounded substantially different from the MMJ recording, and while I acknowledge that there are a multitude of factors that may play into the resultant recording, I wonder if, or how much, the inclement weather was a factor for the MMJ recording.  Not really too relevant, but it’s just something that interests me to consider.
